This week, the 5th graders are learning to sing and play the song “This Land Is Your Land.” After listening to Woody Guthrie sing the original, the students are singing the song. Then, they are playing the melody on Boomwhackers. Afterward, they listen to part of one more version, this time a cover by Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. This neo-soul band gives new life to the old song, and gives our critical thinkers a chance to compare and contrast the two versions. Here are the students’ observations written as Venn diagrams:
